Frequently Asked Questions

What certifications do crane operators need?

OSHA requires that crane operators be certified by a nationally accredited organization (NCCCO, NCCER, or equivalent) or licensed by a state or local government. NCCCO is the most widely recognized — it offers written and practical exams for multiple crane types.

How many questions are on the NCCCO crane exam?

The NCCCO written exam has two parts: Core (90 questions, 2 hours) and a Specialty module (60 questions, 1.5 hours) for your specific crane type (mobile, tower, overhead, etc.). A passing score is typically 70%.

What topics are on the NCCCO core exam?

The core exam covers load charts, rigging and sling angles, hand signals, safety regulations (OSHA 1926 Subpart CC), site and weather conditions, and pre-operational inspections. Load chart math is the most commonly tested skill.
