What is the CDL Passenger endorsement?
The CDL Passenger (P) endorsement is required for any CDL holder who operates a vehicle designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver). This covers city buses, charter buses, school buses (combined with S endorsement), and shuttle vehicles. The endorsement requires passing a knowledge test and a skills (driving) test in the type of vehicle you will operate.

The CDL Passenger endorsement knowledge test is typically 20–30 questions depending on your state. Questions cover passenger loading, emergency evacuation, pre-trip inspection specific to passenger vehicles, and FMCSA regulations for passenger carriers. Most states require a 80% passing score on endorsement tests.
Do I need a P endorsement to drive a school bus?
Yes. To drive a school bus you need both the CDL Passenger (P) endorsement AND the School Bus (S) endorsement. The S endorsement has additional requirements including a specific skills test and, in most states, additional background checks. Always check your state DMV for specific requirements.
