Frequently Asked Questions

What is the elevator mechanic licensing exam?

Most states require elevator mechanics and inspectors to pass a licensing exam based on the ASME A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators. The exam typically covers traction and hydraulic elevator systems, electrical controls, safety devices, and code compliance. Exams are administered by state licensing boards and by the National Elevator Industry Educational Program (NEIEP).

What is ASME A17.1?

ASME A17.1 is the Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). It is the national standard governing the design, construction, installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of elevators and escalators in the United States. It is the primary reference for all elevator mechanic licensing exams.

How long does it take to become a licensed elevator mechanic?

Most elevator mechanics complete a 4–5 year apprenticeship program through NEIEP (National Elevator Industry Educational Program) or a similar union apprenticeship. The apprenticeship combines on-the-job training with classroom study. After completing the apprenticeship, you take your state licensing exam to become a certified journeyman elevator mechanic.

What topics are hardest on the elevator mechanic exam?

The most challenging areas for most candidates are electrical control systems (ladder logic, relay circuits, and drive electronics), ASME A17.1 code specifics (clearances, speeds, and safety device requirements), and hydraulic system hydraulics (jack types, pressure calculations, and valve operation). Drilling these with practice questions and keeping the code reference handy makes a significant difference.
