About OSHA Forklift Certification
OSHA 1910.178(l) requires that all powered industrial truck operators be trained and evaluated by their employer. Unlike CDL or professional certifications, there's no single national test — each employer designs or contracts their own training program and test.
The standard requires training to cover three areas: truck-specific operation and controls, workplace hazards and pedestrian safety, and hands-on evaluation. Most employers use a combination of classroom instruction, a written test, and practical operation checks.
Refresher training is required every 3 years minimum, or sooner if an accident, near-miss, or unsafe operation occurs. The app is designed to help you pass the written portion of your employer's certification test and refresh your knowledge for recertification.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an official OSHA forklift test?
No single standardized national OSHA forklift test exists. OSHA 1910.178(l) requires employers to conduct training and evaluation — either in-house or through a third-party program. Employers choose what test to use. VoltExam covers the OSHA standard and common employer test formats.
What does forklift training and testing cover?
OSHA requires coverage of three areas: (1) truck-related topics (controls, load handling, stability), (2) workplace-related topics (surfaces, pedestrians, loading docks), and (3) practical evaluation (hands-on operation). VoltExam covers all three areas and simulates the written portion of most employer tests.
How often must I recertify my forklift license?
OSHA requires refresher training every 3 years at minimum. However, employers can require more frequent retraining if there's an accident, near-miss, unsafe operation, or change in equipment. The app helps you stay current and prepared for recertification.
Does my forklift certification transfer between employers?
Technically, yes — but most employers won't accept it. Each employer is responsible for training verification, so a new employer typically requires their own training and evaluation. Check with HR at your new job. Some large corporations honor certifications from other facilities.
What types of forklifts require OSHA certification?
All powered industrial trucks (forklifts, telehandlers, boom lifts, etc.) require operator certification under OSHA 1910.178. Manual pallet jacks don't require certification. Powered pallet jacks and ride-on equipment do. VoltExam covers the major forklift types used in warehousing and manufacturing.
How long is a typical forklift training program?
Most employer programs are 4–8 hours: 1–2 hours classroom, 2–4 hours hands-on operation, plus a written test. Some programs are compressed into a single 8-hour day. VoltExam prepares you for the written portion so you walk in confident.
