10 Free DANB Dental Assistant Practice Questions
Q1. Using the Universal Numbering System, which permanent tooth is number 1?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Maxillary Right Third Molar
Tooth #1 is the maxillary right third molar in the Universal Numbering System. Permanent numbering starts at the maxillary right third molar and proceeds around both arches to the mandibular right third molar.
Q2. A certification review asks about epithelial attachment between gingiva and tooth; which tooth anatomy term is correct?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Junctional epithelium
Junctional epithelium is correct because it matches epithelial attachment between gingiva and tooth. The other options are related dental terms, but they do not identify this specific clinical concept.
Q3. Which sterilization concept is associated with the level that kills all microorganisms including spores in dental assisting practice?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Sterilization
Sterilization is correct because it matches the level that kills all microorganisms including spores. The other options are related dental terms, but they do not identify this specific clinical concept.
Q4. When preparing for patient care, which Spaulding classification identifies forceps that penetrate tissue during extraction?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Critical instrument
Critical instrument is correct because it matches forceps that penetrate tissue during extraction. The other options are related dental terms, but they do not identify this specific clinical concept.
Q5. Which dental instrument is associated with reflecting light and providing indirect vision in dental assisting practice?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Mouth mirror
Mouth mirror is correct because it matches reflecting light and providing indirect vision. The other options are related dental terms, but they do not identify this specific clinical concept.
Q6. A certification review asks about rubber dam isolation; which tray setup is correct?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Punch, clamp, forceps, frame, dam, and floss ligature
Punch, clamp, forceps, frame, dam, and floss ligature is correct because it matches rubber dam isolation. The other options are related dental terms, but they do not identify this specific clinical concept.
Q7. A certification review asks about dental care for infants, children, and adolescents; which dental specialty is correct?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Pediatric dentistry
Pediatric dentistry is correct because it matches dental care for infants, children, and adolescents. The other options are related dental terms, but they do not identify this specific clinical concept.
Q8. Which receptor placement concept is associated with receptor parallel to the tooth long axis in dental assisting practice?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Paralleling technique
Paralleling technique is correct because it matches receptor parallel to the tooth long axis. The other options are related dental terms, but they do not identify this specific clinical concept.
Q9. Which restorative material concept is associated with metal mixed with alloy powder in amalgam in dental assisting practice?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Mercury
Mercury is correct because it matches metal mixed with alloy powder in amalgam. The other options are related dental terms, but they do not identify this specific clinical concept.
Q10. Which medical history or vital-sign concept is associated with a normal healthy patient in dental assisting practice?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: ASA I
ASA I is correct because it matches a normal healthy patient. The other options are related dental terms, but they do not identify this specific clinical concept.
What Does the DANB Dental Assistant Exam Cover?
DANB certification for dental assistants is earned by passing component exams. The Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) credential requires three components: General Chairside Assisting (GC), Radiation Health and Safety (RHS), and Infection Control (ICE). RHS covers x-ray physics, radiation biology and safety, exposure and processing technique (paralleling vs. bisecting angle), and quality assurance. ICE covers standard precautions, sterilization and disinfection (the Spaulding classification of instruments), CDC and OSHA guidelines, and instrument reprocessing. General Chairside covers tooth numbering (the Universal Numbering System), oral anatomy, dental instruments and tray setups, dental materials, four-handed dentistry, and patient management. DANB also offers exams recognized or required directly by many state dental boards, so requirements vary by state.
How Hard Is the DANB Exam?
DANB component exams use scaled scoring, and difficulty varies by component — many candidates find the General Chairside component the broadest and hardest because it spans anatomy, instruments, materials, and clinical procedures. The combined RHS/ICE exam has 150 questions with a 120-minute time limit. Precise recall matters: tooth numbers, the Spaulding classification (critical, semicritical, noncritical), sterilization vs. disinfection, and radiation-safety rules are all commonly tested. Because passing scores are scaled, aim to comfortably clear practice tests rather than target a single percentage.
How to Study for the DANB Dental Assistant Exam
- 1.Confirm which exam your state requires — DANB requirements vary by state. Some states require the RHS and/or ICE exams for radiography or infection-control permits; the CDA requires GC, RHS, and ICE. Check your state dental board before you build a study plan.
- 2.Master infection control and the Spaulding classification — Know critical (penetrates tissue, must be sterilized), semicritical, and noncritical instruments; sterilization methods (steam autoclave, dry heat, chemical vapor); and CDC/OSHA standard precautions. ICE is a high-yield, learnable component.
- 3.Learn radiation health and safety — ALARA, exposure factors, the paralleling vs. bisecting-angle technique, film/receptor placement, processing, and QA. RHS rewards understanding technique, not just memorizing terms.
- 4.Memorize tooth numbering and oral anatomy — The Universal Numbering System runs 1 to 32 (tooth 1 is the maxillary right third molar). Know tooth surfaces, quadrants, and key structures like the junctional epithelium for General Chairside.
- 5.Drill instruments, tray setups, and materials — Recognize the mouth mirror, explorer, cotton forceps, and periodontal probe; know rubber-dam and other tray setups; and understand dental materials such as amalgam and its mercury/alloy trituration. Practice with exam-style questions under time.
