10 Free Fire Alarm / NICET Practice Questions
Q1. What is the primary difference between a conventional and an addressable fire alarm system?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Addressable systems identify individual device locations
Addressable systems assign a unique address to each device, allowing the FACP to identify the exact device that has activated or is in trouble.
Q2. What type of smoke detector uses a light source and photosensitive sensor?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Photoelectric
Photoelectric detectors use a light source and photosensitive sensor. When smoke enters, light scatters onto the sensor, triggering an alarm.
Q3. According to NFPA 72, what is required when a smoke detector is installed within 81 feet of a cooking appliance?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: The detector must be listed for the application or relocated
Detectors near cooking appliances must be listed for the application or relocated to prevent nuisance alarms.
Q4. Per NFPA 72, regarding notification appliances: What is the minimum sound level for audible notification appliances?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: 60 dBA
Audible notification appliances must produce a sound level of at least 60 dBA at the hearing distance or 15 dBA above ambient, whichever is greater.
Q5. Per NFPA 72, regarding nfpa 72 code requirements: How long must a fire alarm system battery provide standby power?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: 24 hours
Fire alarm system batteries must provide 24 hours of standby power followed by 5 minutes of alarm operation.
Q6. Per NFPA 72, regarding circuit types & supervision: What is a Class A initiating device circuit?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: A circuit with outgoing and return conductors that operates on a single open or ground fault
Class A circuits use a return path so the circuit can continue to operate even with a single open fault.
Q7. Per NFPA 72, regarding wiring & installation (nec 760): What NEC article covers fire alarm system wiring?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Article 760
NEC Article 760 covers the installation of wiring and equipment for fire alarm systems.
Q8. Per NFPA 72, regarding system testing & inspection: How often must smoke detectors be functionally tested?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Annually
Smoke detectors must be functionally tested at least annually per NFPA 72 Chapter 14.
Q9. Per NFPA 72, regarding facp operations: What is the primary function of the FACP alarm silence button?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: To silence audible notification appliances while maintaining the alarm condition
The alarm silence button silences audible notification while the system remains in alarm condition.
Q10. What is the Record of Completion?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: An NFPA 72-required document that records system installation details and test results
The Record of Completion is required by NFPA 72 to document the fire alarm system as installed and its initial test results.
What Does the NICET Fire Alarm Exam Cover?
NICET Fire Alarm Systems certification is delivered as a computer-based test at a Pearson VUE center and heavily references NFPA 72, the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code. The Level I exam is typically 60 to 80 multiple-choice questions with about a 70% passing score, testing fundamentals: initiating devices, notification appliances, control panels, and basic installation. Higher levels (II, III, IV) add circuit calculations, battery and standby sizing, and system design, and also require documented work experience and supervisor verification. Some questions allow the code as a reference.
How Hard Is the NICET Fire Alarm Exam?
NICET Fire Alarm Systems certification is difficult, with Level I first-attempt pass rates around 65 percent, and each higher level gets harder. Because the exams heavily reference NFPA 72, success depends on knowing the code and navigating it quickly — candidates who cannot locate NFPA 72 sections fast struggle most. Higher levels add circuit calculations, battery and standby sizing, and system design on top of the fundamentals.
How to Study for the NICET Fire Alarm Exam
- 1.Study NFPA 72 directly — learn to navigate it fast, because most questions map to specific code sections.
- 2.Master initiating devices — including smoke versus heat detector selection and spacing.
- 3.Learn notification appliances — candela ratings and coverage.
- 4.Drill circuit calculations for Level II and up — standby battery sizing, NAC voltage drop, and conductor sizing.
- 5.Document your qualifying work experience early — it is required for certification. Drill practice questions until code lookups are second nature.
