10 Free MBLEx Massage Therapy Practice Questions
Q1. In professional massage practice, which tissue type lines body surfaces and forms glands?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Epithelial tissue
Epithelial tissue covers surfaces, lines cavities, and forms glands. Nervous tissue conducts impulses, muscle tissue contracts, and dense regular connective tissue forms structures such as tendons and ligaments.
Q2. Within a massage therapy session, which blood component primarily carries oxygen to tissues?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Erythrocytes
Erythrocytes contain hemoglobin and carry oxygen. Leukocytes defend against infection, platelets assist clotting, and plasma transports dissolved substances.
Q3. For safe treatment planning, which muscle primarily flexes the trunk?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Rectus abdominis
Rectus abdominis is a primary trunk flexor. Erector spinae and multifidus extend and stabilize the spine, while quadratus lumborum assists lateral flexion.
Q4. A client with diabetes reports reduced foot sensation. What modification is most important?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Use cautious pressure and inspect skin carefully
Diabetic neuropathy increases risk because the client may not accurately feel pressure or heat. Careful skin inspection and conservative pressure are appropriate, while intense heat or deep pressure can injure tissue.
Q5. In professional massage practice, which autonomic shift is commonly encouraged by relaxing massage?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Increased parasympathetic activity
Relaxing massage commonly supports parasympathetic activity associated with rest and recovery. It does not permanently suppress endocrine function or shut down sensation.
Q6. During client assessment, in SOAP documentation, where does the client's pain rating belong?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Subjective section
The subjective section contains the client's reported symptoms, goals, and pain ratings. Objective is measurable therapist-observed data, assessment interprets response, and plan describes next steps.
Q7. In a therapeutic massage setting, which measure best shows change in shoulder mobility after treatment?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Range-of-motion comparison
Pre- and post-treatment range-of-motion comparison can show mobility change. Shoe brand, room humidity, and scheduling do not measure shoulder mobility outcomes.
Q8. A client asks to trade accounting services for massage. What is the main ethical concern?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Whether bartering compromises boundaries or objectivity
Bartering creates a dual relationship that may affect boundaries, expectations, and objectivity. Practical details do not address the core ethical risk.
Q9. In a therapeutic massage setting, what is the basic standard for draping during massage?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Only the area being worked is uncovered
Professional draping exposes only the area being worked while maintaining privacy and warmth. Genitals remain covered at all times, and draping is not optional based on age.
Q10. In professional massage practice, which Swedish stroke uses gliding contact to warm tissue?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Effleurage
Effleurage uses gliding strokes that warm tissue and introduce touch. Petrissage kneads, tapotement percusses, and vibration applies shaking or trembling movements.
What Does the MBLEx Massage Therapy Exam Cover?
The MBLEx (Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination) is a 100-question multiple-choice exam with a 100-minute time limit, scored on a scaled system where the passing threshold is set by the FSMTB rather than a fixed percentage. Content is weighted toward anatomy and physiology, kinesiology — muscle origins, insertions, and actions — and pathology and contraindications, which together account for most questions. Ethics and professional practice plus the benefits and effects of soft-tissue techniques round out the exam. It is knowledge-heavy rather than hands-on, and results are reported as pass or fail immediately after testing.
How Hard Is the MBLEx?
The MBLEx is moderately difficult, with a first-attempt pass rate around 62 percent. The heaviest content areas — anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, and pathology and contraindications — account for most questions and most failures, so candidates weak on muscles and body systems tend to struggle. Aim for roughly 75 percent or higher on practice tests before you sit the real exam. Most candidates are ready in three to six weeks after finishing their massage program.
How to Study for the MBLEx
- 1.Lead with kinesiology and anatomy — muscle origins, insertions, and actions carry heavy weight and reward memorization through repetition.
- 2.Study pathology and contraindications so you know when massage is unsafe.
- 3.Learn the physiological effects of soft-tissue techniques on the body systems.
- 4.Review ethics, boundaries, and professional practice.
- 5.Use a muscle-and-anatomy reference and drill practice questions daily until you consistently score 75 percent or higher.
