What Does the CMA Medical Assistant Exam Cover?

The CMA (AAMA) Certified Medical Assistant exam has 200 multiple-choice questions — 180 scored plus 20 unscored pretest items — delivered in four 40-minute segments for about 160 minutes of testing. It spans three broad domains: general (medical terminology, anatomy, psychology, communication, and law and ethics), administrative (scheduling, coding, billing, and records), and clinical (patient care, pharmacology, phlebotomy, and diagnostic testing). Its breadth is the main challenge rather than any single hard topic. Scores are scaled from 200 to 800, and the exam is administered by Prometric year-round. The competing RMA (AMT) exam is a comparable alternative credential.

How Hard Is the CMA Exam?

The CMA (AAMA) exam is moderately difficult, with recent first-attempt pass rates around 69 percent for candidates from accredited programs. Scores are scaled from 200 to 800, and you need a scaled score of 405 to pass. Because the exam spans general, administrative, and clinical domains, its breadth is the main challenge rather than any single hard topic — candidates who over-focus on clinical skills and neglect terminology, anatomy, or the administrative content tend to struggle.

How to Study for the CMA Exam

  1. 1.Study across all three domains rather than over-focusing on clinical skills, since the breadth is the challenge.
  2. 2.Lock in medical terminology and anatomy first — they thread through every section.
  3. 3.Learn the administrative content: CPT and ICD coding basics, scheduling, and HIPAA.
  4. 4.Master the clinical content: vital-sign ranges, pharmacology, phlebotomy order of draw, and infection control.
  5. 5.Use practice questions to find your weak domains, then drill those and take full-length timed tests until you consistently pass.
