What Does the Pesticide Applicator Exam Cover?
State pesticide applicator exams are set by each state's department of agriculture. Most states require a Core (General Standards) exam plus one or more category exams — agricultural, ornamental and turf, right-of-way, structural, aquatic, and others — and you must pass each separately. The Core section covers label comprehension, pesticide safety, PPE, environmental protection, and the signal words Caution, Warning, and Danger. Exams typically run 50 to 100 multiple-choice questions per section with a 70% passing score. Commercial applicators face more categories and stricter requirements than private (farm) applicators.
How Hard Is the Pesticide Applicator Exam?
State pesticide applicator exams are moderately difficult, with pass rates around 70 percent. The Core (General Standards) section is the most-failed part because applicators over-focus on their specialty and neglect label comprehension, safety, PPE, and environmental protection. Reading and interpreting the pesticide label correctly is the single most-tested skill, and calculation questions on mix and dilution math appear on nearly every exam.
