10 Free CRCST Sterile Processing Practice Questions
Q1. What is the minimum exposure time and temperature for a dynamic air removal (prevacuum) steam sterilization cycle for wrapped items?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: 4 minutes at 270°F (132°C)
The standard parameter for a dynamic air removal (prevacuum) cycle for wrapped instruments is 4 minutes exposure at 270°F (132°C). Gravity cycles typically require 30 minutes at 250°F (121°C).
Q2. Which forceps are atraumatic and specifically designed for handling vascular tissue?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: DeBakey forceps
DeBakey forceps have distinct, fine serrations designed to grip delicate vascular tissue without causing trauma or puncturing it.
Q3. Which agency regulates disinfectants and sterilants used on non-living surfaces?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)
The EPA regulates surface disinfectants and liquid chemical sterilants (as pesticides). The FDA regulates high-level disinfectants used on medical devices.
Q4. When handling sterile packages, technicians should:Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Lift them to move them (lift, don't drag)
Dragging packages can create friction heat or tears, compromising the barrier. Always lift and place.
Q5. Which body system is responsible for circulating blood throughout the body?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Cardiovascular system
The cardiovascular system (heart and blood vessels) pumps and circulates blood.
Q6. What is the unit of measurement for bacteria?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Micron (Micrometer)
Bacteria are measured in microns (1/25,000 of an inch).
Q7. A 'stat' order means the item is needed:Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Immediately
Stat (Latin 'statim') means immediately.
Q8. What is the minimum contact time for enzymatic presoak solution according to most manufacturer guidelines?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Per label instructions — typically 1 to 10 minutes
Enzymatic presoak contact time must follow the manufacturer's Instructions for Use (IFU). Typically 1–10 minutes, but always verify the specific product label. Too short a contact time may not allow enzymes to break down proteins and carbohydrates adequately.
Q9. What information is required on the label applied to every sterile package?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Expiration date (or event-related sterility note), lot control number (sterilizer ID, cycle number, date), and technician initials
Every sterile package must be labeled with: an expiration date or statement of event-related sterility, a lot control number (sterilizer number, load/cycle number, date of sterilization), and the technician's initials or ID. This enables traceability for recalls.
Q10. Which sterilization method is appropriate for processing flexible endoscopes when high-level disinfection is insufficient?Show answer
✓ Correct Answer: Peracetic acid liquid immersion sterilization (e.g., STERIS/Cyclex) — for heat/moisture-sensitive flexible scopes requiring sterilization rather than HLD
When flexible endoscopes require sterilization (rather than HLD), liquid peracetic acid immersion systems (or low-temperature H2O2 methods if the scope is compatible) are used. Peracetic acid is appropriate for heat- and moisture-tolerant endoscopes, processes in ~30 minutes, but produces no dry sterile product.
What Does the CRCST Sterile Processing Exam Cover?
The HSPA CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) exam has 150 multiple-choice questions covering the full sterile-processing workflow: decontamination, cleaning and inspection, assembly and packaging, sterilization methods and parameters, sterile storage, and distribution. The most-tested areas are decontamination and sterilization — steam and autoclave parameters, low-temperature methods such as hydrogen peroxide and ethylene oxide, and biological and chemical monitoring. Passing the exam is provisional: you must also complete and document 400 hours of hands-on sterile-processing experience within six months to earn the credential. The competing CBSPD certification has a similar format.
How Hard Is the CRCST Exam?
The HSPA CRCST exam is difficult, with a first-attempt pass rate around 60 percent. It is a 150-question computer-based test delivered at a Prometric center over about 3 hours, and the passing score is a 70 percent scaled result. The heaviest topics are decontamination and sterilization, so candidates who are shaky on steam cycle parameters, low-temperature methods, and monitoring tend to struggle most. Remember that passing is only provisional until you document 400 hours of hands-on experience.
How to Study for the CRCST Exam
- 1.Prioritize decontamination and sterilization — together they carry the most questions on the exam.
- 2.Learn steam sterilization parameters cold — temperature, time, and pressure for gravity versus pre-vacuum cycles — and know the low-temperature methods and when each is used.
- 3.Master the monitoring types: mechanical, chemical indicators, and biological indicators.
- 4.Study instrument assembly and packaging, event-related sterility, and the one-directional dirty-to-clean workflow.
- 5.Drill practice questions, and start logging your 400 required hours of hands-on experience early so you can earn the credential on time.
