What is the CMA exam?
The CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) exam is administered by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). It is 200 questions over 160 minutes and covers general knowledge, administrative tasks, and clinical procedures. A passing score requires approximately 430 points on a 200–800 scale. The CMA is one of the most recognized medical assistant credentials in the United States.
What is the CMA exam pass rate?
The CMA first-attempt pass rate is approximately 65–70%. The most commonly failed sections are clinical procedures, pharmacology, and medical law/ethics. Candidates with strong clinical training who supplement with targeted practice questions significantly outperform those who rely on class notes alone.
CMA vs RMA — which certification should I get?
Both the CMA (AAMA) and RMA (AMT) are nationally recognized medical assistant credentials accepted by most employers. The CMA is more widely recognized in physician offices and outpatient clinics. The RMA tends to be preferred in multi-specialty practices. If you graduated from an AAMA-accredited program, you are eligible for the CMA; the RMA has more flexible eligibility requirements.
