Frequently Asked Questions

What is the NATE certification?

NATE (North American Technician Excellence) is the largest HVACR technician certification organization in the United States. NATE certifications are earned by passing specialty exams in areas like air conditioning, gas heating, heat pumps, and air distribution. NATE-certified technicians are in high demand and often command higher wages. The certification is valid for 5 years and requires renewal through continuing education or re-examination.

How hard is the NATE exam?

The NATE exam is considered moderately difficult. Pass rates vary by specialty but typically range from 60–75% for first-time candidates. The most challenging sections are system diagnostics, pressure-temperature calculations, and electrical troubleshooting. Candidates with hands-on field experience typically outperform those without it.

Do I need EPA 608 before taking NATE?

EPA 608 certification is a separate federal requirement for handling refrigerants and is not a prerequisite for NATE certification. However, the NATE air conditioning and heat pump exams overlap heavily with EPA 608 content (refrigerant handling, pressure-temperature relationships, recovery procedures). Most technicians pursue EPA 608 before or alongside NATE certification.
