California Security Guard Notes

California requires a Guard Card from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). Training includes 8 hours pre-assignment, 16 hours within 30 days, and 16 hours within 6 months. Powers of arrest training is required. Armed guards need a Firearms Permit on top of the Guard Card.

How to Get Your Security Guard License in California

   Complete required training

   California requires 40 hours of state-approved security guard training covering legal powers, emergency procedures, report writing, and patrol techniques.

   Pass the written exam

   BSIS Online Exam administers the security guard exam with a 70% passing score. Exam fee is $40 application.

   Complete a background check

   Required (DOJ + FBI) is required. Felony convictions typically disqualify applicants. Processing time varies by state.

   Submit your license application

   Apply to California BSIS with your training certificate, exam results, and background check clearance.

   Maintain your license

   Security guard licenses typically renew every 1–2 years. Many states require continuing education for renewal. Armed guard endorsements require separate firearms training and qualification.
