About the CDL Hazmat Endorsement Exam
The Hazmat endorsement is required for any CDL driver transporting hazardous materials as defined by FMCSA regulations. The written exam is administered at your state DMV and typically has 30 questions, with a passing score of 80%.
Unlike other CDL endorsements, Hazmat also requires a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check. You'll need to apply for this separately β it takes 2β4 weeks. Plan ahead if your employer needs you Hazmat-certified by a specific date.
The exam tests five main areas: Hazmat classes and placards, communication rules (shipping papers, labels, marking), loading/unloading, bulk packaging, and security plans. The cheat sheet covers the highest-frequency questions from all five areas.
