What Are Drainage Fixture Units (DFU)?
A Drainage Fixture Unit (DFU) is a unit of measure that represents the probable discharge load of a plumbing fixture on a drainage system. The DFU system, defined in IPC (International Plumbing Code) Table 709.1, converts different fixture types into a common unit so drain pipes can be sized to handle the combined flow from all fixtures on a branch, stack, or building drain. A toilet is rated at 4 DFU; a bathroom sink at 1 DFU; a bathtub, shower, kitchen sink, or clothes washer each at 2 DFU.
IPC Table 710.1 maps total DFU loads to minimum horizontal drain pipe sizes. A 2-inch pipe handles up to 21 DFU; 3-inch handles up to 42 DFU (with restrictions on water closets); 4-inch handles up to 180 DFU. Water closets (toilets) cannot be connected to a 2-inch horizontal drain — a 3-inch minimum is required. For more than 2 water closets on a horizontal branch, a 4-inch minimum is required. The building drain serving the entire building typically requires a 4-inch pipe at minimum when toilets are present.
The plumbing license exam tests DFU calculations extensively. Expect questions asking you to calculate total DFU for a described bathroom group or building, then identify the correct pipe size from IPC Table 710.1. Know the DFU values for the most common fixtures cold: toilet (4), sink (1), bathtub/shower/kitchen sink/clothes washer (2), urinal (4), floor drain 2" (2), floor drain 3" (3). These appear on virtually every state plumber license exam.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the DFU value of a toilet?
A toilet (water closet) is rated at 4 DFU under IPC Table 709.1. A urinal is also 4 DFU. These are the highest DFU values for individual residential fixtures — they represent the large volume discharge of a flush cycle. A bathroom group (toilet + lavatory + bathtub or shower) totals 6 DFU.
What is the minimum drain pipe size for a toilet?
A 3-inch minimum horizontal drain pipe is required to serve a single toilet per IPC. A 2-inch pipe cannot serve any water closet. For more than 2 toilets on a horizontal branch drain, a 4-inch pipe is required. The IPC building drain must be at least 4 inches when any water closets are connected to the building drainage system.
What is the difference between DFU and WSFU?
DFU (Drainage Fixture Unit) measures the discharge load a fixture puts on the drain, waste, and vent (DWV) system and is used to size drain pipes per IPC Table 710.1. WSFU (Water Supply Fixture Unit) measures the demand a fixture puts on the cold/hot water supply line and is used with Hunter's Curve to size supply piping per IPC Table E103.3(2). The two values are not interchangeable — a toilet is 4 DFU but only 2.5 WSFU (flush tank), and you need separate calculations for supply and drain sides of the system.
Are floor drains counted in the DFU total?
Yes — emergency floor drains carry an IPC DFU value of 2 for a 2-inch trap or 3 for a 3-inch trap (IPC Table 709.1). They must be included in the branch and building drain DFU totals even though they discharge only intermittently. Note that some local amendments or the UPC may rate floor drains differently, and continuous-flow drains (like indirect waste receptors for equipment) are sized by GPM rather than DFU.
What is the difference between IPC and UPC?
The IPC (International Plumbing Code) is published by the ICC and is adopted in most states. The UPC (Uniform Plumbing Code) is published by the IAPMO and is primarily used in California, Oregon, Washington, and several other western states. The DFU values and pipe sizing tables are similar between the two codes but have specific differences — always verify which code your state has adopted before using tables on a job.
Does this calculator work for vent sizing too?
No — this calculator sizes horizontal drain pipes only, based on IPC Table 710.1. Vent stack sizing uses a different table (IPC Table 904.1) and different DFU thresholds. The vent system must be sized separately using the DFU values for the fixtures connected to each vent stack.
