Frequently Asked Questions
What is the EPA Lead Renovator certification?
The EPA Lead Renovator certification (also called RRP certification) is required under the EPA's Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule — 40 CFR Part 745 — for contractors who perform regulated activities that disturb lead-based paint in pre-1978 homes, child-occupied facilities, and schools. Certification requires an 8-hour accredited training course followed by a written exam.
What topics are on the EPA Lead Renovator exam?
The exam covers lead-safe work practices, required containment methods and waste disposal procedures, cleaning verification requirements, recordkeeping obligations, prohibited work practices (e.g., open-flame burning, power planing without HEPA), notification requirements, and the scope of properties covered under 40 CFR Part 745.
How long is EPA Lead Renovator certification valid?
EPA Lead Renovator certification is valid for 5 years. Renewal requires a 4-hour refresher course and passing a refresher exam. Firms performing RRP work must also be EPA-certified and must use certified renovators on each project.
Who needs EPA Lead Renovator certification?
Any contractor, subcontractor, or maintenance professional who is paid to perform renovation, repair, or painting work that disturbs more than 6 square feet of lead-based paint per room in pre-1978 housing or more than 20 square feet on the exterior of such housing must be a certified renovator or be supervised by one.
