About ASE Certification
ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) is the gold standard automotive certification in North America. The eight A-series tests cover all major automotive systems and are administered by Prometric testing centers. Each A-series test is 40–60 questions and requires approximately 70–75% correct to pass (varies per test).
To earn an ASE badge, you need 2 years of hands-on automotive experience (or 1 year plus a 2-year degree), pass the relevant test(s), and submit proof of experience to ASE. Certifications are valid for 5 years and require recertification through retesting or continuing education.
ASE Master Technician status requires passing all 8 A-series tests plus 1 year of hands-on experience in each area. Most ASE certifications are highly valued by employers — many shops won't hire technicians without current ASE credentials. The app prepares you thoroughly for each individual A-series test.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many ASE tests are there?
The core ASE certification program has eight A-series tests: A1 (Engine Repair), A2 (Automatic Transmission), A3 (Manual Drivetrain), A4 (Steering & Suspension), A5 (Brakes), A6 (Electrical/Electronic Systems), A7 (Heating & Air Conditioning), and A8 (Engine Performance). There are also L-series tests (light vehicles) and T-series (truck equipment). Most technicians start with the A-series.
Do I need hands-on experience before taking ASE tests?
Yes. ASE requires either 2 years of hands-on automotive experience OR 1 year of hands-on experience plus a 2-year automotive degree. You take the test first, then submit proof of experience to ASE. Without experience documentation, you won't earn the ASE badge — but you can still pass the exam.
What's on the A8 Engine Performance test?
A8 covers engine management systems, fuel delivery, ignition systems, emission controls, turbocharging, and diagnostic procedures. Questions heavily emphasize OBD-II code reading, sensor operation, and fuel system diagnostics. If you're weak on fuel injectors, oxygen sensors, and fuel pressure regulation, you'll struggle. The app drills these topics heavily.
How long are ASE certifications valid?
ASE certifications are valid for 5 years. After 5 years, you must retake the test(s) to maintain certification. You can recertify by retaking the exam or, in some cases, by completing approved continuing education. Many employers require current ASE certification as a job requirement.
Can I take all 8 ASE tests at once?
Yes. You can take any or all of the A-series tests in a single testing session. Most candidates spread them out over several years as they gain expertise in different systems. Some experienced technicians take multiple tests in one day. The app covers all eight A-series exams.
What score do I need to pass an ASE test?
Each ASE test uses a scaled scoring system. Typically, you need approximately 70–75% correct to pass, but the exact cutoff varies per test and test administration. Each test has 40–60 questions, and you have 1.5–2 hours to complete it. The app's score estimates align with real ASE passing criteria.
