Reacceptance Testing: The Part People Get Wrong
Reacceptance is where good techs still miss exam questions, because the intuitive answer ('just test the new devices') is incomplete. NFPA 72 requires that when you modify a system, you test all components directly affected by the change AND a representative sample of the rest — commonly framed as retesting affected devices plus a percentage of the unaffected initiating devices, up to a capped number, to confirm the modification didn't disturb the existing system. The logic is simple once you see it: adding a device or reprogramming the panel can knock something loose or overwrite a setting somewhere you weren't looking, so you verify a slice of the untouched system as a safety net. Two things the exam tests here. First, software or programming changes count as modifications that trigger reacceptance — it isn't only physical device additions. Second, the sampling requirement exists specifically to catch collateral damage, so an answer that limits testing strictly to the changed devices is the wrong one. Know that 'affected devices plus a sample of unaffected devices' is the shape of the correct answer.
Documentation: The Record of Completion and ITM Records
On the NICET exam, testing and documenting the test are treated as inseparable, and the paperwork is very testable because it's concrete. Two documents matter most. The Record of Completion is filled out by the installing contractor at system acceptance. It captures what was installed and confirms the system was inspected and tested — building name and address, system type and manufacturer, device counts and types, the tests performed, and sign-offs from the installer and, where required, the AHJ. NFPA 72 provides a sample Record of Completion form in the code itself, and candidates are expected to recognize what belongs on it. It's completed after installation and wiring verification but as part of the acceptance process. The Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance records required by Chapter 14 cover the ongoing life of the system. Every service report should identify the building, the system type and manufacturer, the date, the technician's name and qualifications, a device-by-device record of tests with pass/fail results, any deficiencies found with recommended corrective action, and the system status when the tech leaves. Records must be retained for at least one year — a number worth memorizing, with the caveat the exam sometimes adds: many jurisdictions require longer, so the AHJ can impose a stricter standard. When a code minimum and a local requirement collide, the more stringent one governs. That 'AHJ can be stricter' principle is a recurring exam theme well beyond documentation.
