The Numbers, From the Handbook
These come from NCCCO's Mobile Crane Operator Candidate Handbook. They are worth getting right because the Core clock is tighter than most candidates assume. Core written exam: 90 questions, 90 minutes, calculator not permitted. That is one minute per question, on an exam that includes load chart and rigging math. Mobile specialty written exam — LAT, TLL or TSS: 26 questions, 60 minutes, calculator permitted. Just over two minutes per question, with a calculator. Service Truck Crane (STC): a separate exam at 70 questions in 90 minutes, calculator not permitted. The asymmetry is the point. The exam where the math is hardest is the exam where you have the least time per question and no calculator.

What the Designation Codes Mean
NCCCO's mobile crane specialties are referred to by code far more often than by name, including on the exam registration forms: LAT — Lattice Boom Cranes. Covers both lattice boom crawler and lattice boom truck cranes under a single designation. TLL — Telescopic Boom Cranes, Swing Cab. TSS — Telescopic Boom Cranes, Fixed Cab. TLL and TSS are easy to transpose and the distinction matters: swing cab and fixed cab machines have different load chart structures, different operator positions relative to the load, and different setup considerations. Why You Should Distrust Any Site Quoting a Passing Percentage
Search for the NCCCO passing score and you will find "70%" repeated across prep sites, forums and training company pages — none of which cite NCCCO, because NCCCO does not publish it. What the handbook actually says is that CCO written examinations are criterion-referenced examinations, and that a candidate must obtain a score equal to or higher than a predetermined passing score to pass the test. The cut score itself is not disclosed. This is not pedantry. A criterion-referenced cut score is set against the difficulty of the specific item set, which means the number of questions you need right is not fixed at some percentage you can aim for. Candidates who target "70% and I'm safe" are optimising against a number nobody has published. The safe approach is the boring one: be comfortably above your own practice ceiling before you sit it. We used to quote 70% ourselves on this site. We were repeating the industry rumour, and we have removed it.
The 12-Month Rule
One deadline NCCCO does publish: "Candidates have 12 months after they pass their first exam to pass the corresponding exam(s) for the same designation(s)." In practice this bites candidates who pass the Core, get busy on a job, and let the specialty or the practical drift. Pass one, and the clock starts on the rest of that designation. Many candidates schedule the Core and a specialty in the same sitting for exactly this reason — it also saves a second trip and a second registration. The trade-off is fatigue: the Core is 90 questions against a 90-minute clock with no calculator, and candidates who sit the specialty immediately afterwards report the second exam feeling harder than it is.
Budgeting the Core Clock
One minute per question with no calculator changes how you should practise. The regulatory, signal and inspection questions are recall. You should be answering those in 20 to 30 seconds and banking the difference. That bank is what pays for the load chart and rigging items, which cannot be rushed and which carry the arithmetic. The most common failure pattern is not ignorance, it is pace: candidates who can do the sling tension math correctly but slowly, having only ever practised untimed. Practising untimed builds the wrong reflex. Run your mocks at 90 minutes for 90 questions with no calculator and no notes, and find out where you actually are.
