About the NCCCO Crane Operator Exam

The NCCCO (National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators) is the standard certification body for crane operators across North America. Most states require NCCCO certification to operate cranes on construction sites, and OSHA regulations (29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC) require certification for cranes above 2,000 lb capacity on construction sites.

The written exam has two parts: the Core exam (required for all crane types, 60 questions, 70% passing score) and a specialty exam based on your crane type. Mobile Crane is the most common specialty. You must pass both written sections before scheduling the practical skills test.

Load chart questions require math — knowing how to read a crane's rated capacity at a given radius is the most technically demanding part of the exam. The app walks through load chart problems step by step with full explanations. If you fail, NCCCO allows retakes after a 30-day waiting period.

Frequently Asked Questions

How hard is the NCCCO crane operator exam?

The NCCCO written exam has a national pass rate of approximately 55–65% for first-time test-takers. Load chart questions and rigging calculations are the most common failure points. The app drills these specifically with step-by-step explanations.

What does the NCCCO exam consist of?

The NCCCO Crane Operator certification includes a written exam and a practical hands-on test. The written exam has a Core component (taken by all candidates) plus a specialty exam based on your crane type (Mobile, Tower, Overhead, etc.). Each section is 60 questions with a 70% passing threshold.

How long is the NCCCO certification valid?

NCCCO certifications are valid for 5 years. After 5 years, you must complete recertification — which includes a written exam but no practical test if you maintain your medical and continuing education requirements.

Does this app cover the Core and Specialty exams?

Yes. The app covers both the NCCCO Core exam content (required for all crane types) and Mobile Crane specialty content. Tower crane and overhead crane content is also included. You can filter by section in the app.

Is the NCCCO certification valid across all states?

NCCCO is the nationally recognized standard. Most states with crane operator licensing requirements accept NCCCO certification. Some states (New York, California, Nevada) have their own requirements on top of NCCCO — check with your state's Department of Labor.

How long should I study?

Most candidates study 3–6 weeks before the written exam. Focus hardest on load charts and rigging calculations — these are the most math-intensive topics and the ones most test-takers underestimate. The app's timed practice mode is built for exam simulation.

NCCCO Crane Operator Exam — Common Questions

What is on the NCCCO crane operator exam?

The NCCCO crane operator exam has two parts: a written exam and a practical skills evaluation. The written exam covers load charts, rigging, signaling, safety, inspection, and OSHA regulations. NCCCO offers separate exams for mobile crane, tower crane, and overhead crane. The core written exam is 150 questions with a 70% passing score requirement.

How many questions are on the NCCCO exam?

The NCCCO core written exam contains 150 multiple-choice questions. Specialty exams (like mobile crane or lattice boom crawler) add additional questions specific to the crane type. The passing score is 70% for most modules. The practical exam is scored separately by a NCCCO examiner at an approved test site.

How hard is the NCCCO crane operator exam?

The NCCCO crane operator exam is considered one of the harder trade certifications due to the complexity of load chart calculations, rigging math, and crane-specific regulations. First-time pass rates are estimated between 40 and 60 percent. Candidates who fail most often struggle with load chart reading and rigging weight calculations. Strong math skills and 60 or more hours of study are recommended.

Is NCCCO certification required by OSHA?

Yes. OSHA 1926.1427 requires crane operators to be certified by a qualifying accredited certifier. NCCCO is the most widely recognized accredited certifier in the United States. Many states and project owners require NCCCO certification specifically. The requirement took full effect in 2018 after a compliance delay period.
