When a question describes 'a complete functional test of all devices,' the answer is annual. The single most reliable way to lose a frequency question is to assume 'more critical = more frequent.' A smoke detector feels like the most safety-critical device in the building, but its functional test is annual, not monthly — frequency in NFPA 72 is set by failure modes and false-alarm risk, not by how important the device feels.

Battery Testing — The Detail That Trips Everyone

The secondary (standby) battery gets a semiannual load-voltage test — you put the system on battery and confirm the voltage holds under load. The charger test and the discharge test are annual.
