The Four Core Fades

Low Fade — starts just above the ears, ends around the temple. Most conservative, professional look.

Mid Fade — starts mid-ear height, blends up through the temples. The all-purpose fade.

High Fade — starts at or above the temple line. Bold, modern look.

Skin/Bald Fade — taper goes all the way down to bare skin. Can be paired with any starting height (low skin, mid skin, high skin).

Tools & Guards

Clippers — for bulk removal and the longer parts of the fade. Trimmers (outliners) — for sharp lines, neckline, around ears. Guards: #1 (1/8"), #1.5, #2 (1/4"), #3 (3/8"), #4 (1/2"). Each is roughly 1/8" longer than the last.

For a skin fade, work down through guards in order (#3 → #2 → #1.5 → #1 → lever-open #1 → no guard) and use the corner of the blade to remove the harshest line.

Blending: The Key Skill

A clean fade has no visible line between guard lengths. The technique: 'scoop' or 'rock' the clipper out of the head as you move up, so the blade gradually lifts off the scalp.

For stubborn lines, use a shorter guard at a partial angle to cut into the transition area. Cross-check by combing hair upward and looking for any darker bands.

📖 Key Terms

Guideline
The first cut at the lowest point of the fade. Everything blends up from here.
Weight line
The visible band where hair length changes. The enemy of a good fade — must be blended out.
Lever play
Adjusting the clipper lever to fine-tune cutting length between full guard sizes.
Bald fade
Taper that goes all the way to skin. Requires a foil shaver or close-cutting trimmer to finish.

💡 Exam Tips

  • Know your guards by length — exam questions often ask 'which guard is 1/4 inch?' (#2).
  • Always work from the bottom up. Setting the guideline first prevents over-cutting.
  • Disinfect clipper blades between every client — non-negotiable for the state board.
  • Skin/bald fades require a foil shaver for the cleanest finish; a #0 won't get you fully to skin.
