Frequently Asked Questions
How many questions are on the barber state board exam?
Most state barber theory exams have 60–100 multiple-choice questions. Topics include haircutting and shaving techniques, infection control and sanitation, electricity and chemical services, anatomy and physiology, and state barber law. A separate practical exam tests hands-on skills.
What is on the barber state board theory exam?
The theory exam covers trichology and scalp disorders, shaving and straight razor techniques, clipper and scissor cutting methods, scalp treatments and chemical relaxers, infection control (bacteriology, sterilization, decontamination), skin and hair anatomy, electricity in barbering, and state board rules and regulations.
What score do I need to pass the barber exam?
Most state barber board written exams require a passing score of 70–75%. Some states administer through PSI or Pearson VUE testing centers. If you fail, waiting periods and fees apply — usually 2–4 weeks before you can retest.
How is the barber exam different from the cosmetology exam?
Barber exams emphasize shaving, straight razor technique, beard and mustache design, and barbering-specific scalp treatments. Cosmetology exams cover more chemical services (highlights, perms) and nail/skin care. Some states allow crossover licensing — check your state board for specifics.
