What exam do I need to become a sterile processing technician?
The most widely recognized certification is the CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) offered by IAHCSMM. Other certifications include CSPDT (CBSPD) and HSPA certifications. Many hospitals require the CRCST within 18 months of hire.
How many questions are on the CRCST exam?
The CRCST exam has 150 questions (125 scored + 25 unscored pretest). You have 3 hours to complete it. A passing score is 75% on the scored portion. The exam covers decontamination, assembly, sterilization, sterile storage, and distribution.
What topics are tested on the CRCST exam?
Topics include decontamination processes and cleaning methods, instrument assembly and tray preparation, sterilization methods (steam, EO, VHP, dry heat), biological and chemical indicators, sterile storage and distribution, and quality assurance. Sterilization methods are the highest-yield area.
