Key Notes for IA
Iowa requires 96 hours of approved pre-licensing education before sitting for the exam. You may take the Pearson VUE exam before completing all 96 hours, but your license will not be issued until all hours are verified by the Iowa Real Estate Commission. The exam fee is $125 and the license application fee is also $125. Iowa salesperson licenses must be renewed every 3 years. Continuing education of 36 hours is required per renewal cycle, including 3 hours each of mandatory topics (fair housing, agency disclosure, and ethics). Iowa offers reciprocity with Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, and South Dakota — applicants from those states may be eligible for a streamlined licensing process. Pearson VUE test centers serving Iowa candidates are located in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Sioux City, and Iowa City.
How to Prepare for the Iowa Real Estate Exam
After completing your 96-hour pre-licensing course, dedicate 2–3 weeks to exam-specific practice before scheduling your Pearson VUE appointment. Focus on the topics most commonly missed: commission and proration calculations, agency law (fiduciary duties, dual agency rules), Fair Housing Act protected classes, and contract law (offer, acceptance, consideration, contingencies). The Real Estate Prep app includes 600+ practice questions organized by topic — study on your commute, then test your readiness before booking your state exam.
